Prior to settlement
In 1860 the Burke & Wills Expedition passed through the area now known as the Bulloo Shire. The famous Burke and Wills "Dig Tree" is located on Nappamerrie Station

Early Settlement. The earliest settlement in the area was in 1864 and Thargomindah town was gazetted in 1874

Hot Water to Spare
In 1891 drilling started in order to find a supply of water for the town. In 1893 an exceptionally good supply was struck at 795 metres. the temperature of the water coming out of the bore was 84° C. Thargomindah was the first town to have reticulated bore water.

Hydro-Electric Scheme
Australia's first hydro-electric scheme was sited in Thargomindah when in 1893 the streets of the town were lit by means of a generator coupled to a water turbine driven by the bore's natural water pressure. The lights were lit this way until 1951.
